Kimberly wanted outdoor maternity photos in the winter! I love winter maternity photos! She suggested photos around Lake Summerside. I’ve never photographed there before. It’s a private lake for the residents of Summerside and the rest of Edmonton is always super jealous in the summertime when we see the photos on Facebook of them laying on the beach.
This was a super unique location for me in the winter time. A big event had just wrapped up a few weeks prior (where they jump into the frozen water of the lake). The giant ice blocks that were cut out of the lake were still there and it made for a really cool winter aspect. I wanted to use my big outdoor flash for this session and leading up to the date the weather looked like it would be perfect. My softbox on my flash is 8 feet tall and 8 feet wide. It is big and not something I would normally bring outside. The forecast for the day of our Edmonton maternity session was super warm. HOWEVER, about 30 minutes before the session was to begin the weather changed. And in Edmonton when the weather changes, it changes fast. It got super windy (not ideal for a giant softbox) and cold. My husband came with me to basically be the anchor so my flash didn’t blow away. But I love how the maternity session turned out. The setting sun in the fast-moving clouds; the ice blocks and the wind in Kimberly’s hair. It was pretty awesome. I’d do it again! Maybe with less wind.
